Dame Elizabeth Violet Maconchy LeFanu DBE was an Irish-English composer, considered one of the finest from Great Britain and Ireland. Born in Hertfordshire to Irish parents, she was raised in England and Ireland. Beginning her musical education in Dublin, she progressed to study at the Royal College of Music in London under notable teachers including Vaughan Williams. Maconchy's works were known for their energetic and imaginative qualities, with over 200 compositions credited to her name. She championed the conditions of composers, held the chair of the Composers Guild of Great Britain, and was President of the Society for the Promotion of New Music.
