The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band consisted of singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. They were a defining act of 1980s British independent music, fusing 1960s rock and post-punk. They reached mainstream success with albums 'Meat Is Murder', 'The Queen Is Dead', and 'Strangeways, Here We Come'. Internal tensions led to their breakup in 1987.
