More about Neithard Bethke
Neithard Bethke, born as the eighth of ten children in a Protestant pastoral family, began his musical journey at 13 when he took his first position as an organist. After studying church music, composition, and conducting in multiple cities including Lübeck, Freiburg im Breisgau, Paris, Madrid, and Hamburg, he was appointed church musician at Ratzeburg Cathedral in 1969. In 1972, he was titled as a church music director and further enhanced his education with studies in musicology, theology, and history. Bethke earned a doctorate with a thesis on Kurt Thomas in 1988 and received an honorary professorship by the state of Schleswig-Holstein in 1999 for his contributions to church music and culture. He also led the Ratzeburg volunteer fire brigade between 1993 and 2004 and is a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit on the ribbon.
