Kevin Volans, born on 26 July 1949, is a composer and pianist of South African origin who holds Irish citizenship. Educated by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel in Cologne during the 1970s, he became a part of the Neue Einfacheit movement. His late 1970s work focused on combining elements of African indigenous music with European contemporary styles. Although he later distanced himself from directly engaging with African music, its influence persists in his compositions through techniques like interlocking rhythms and repetition. Volans moved to Ireland in 1986 where he continued to develop his unique sound, resonant with abstract art schools, and obtained Irish citizenship in 1995【27†source】.
