More about José Vianna da Motta
José Vianna da Motta (1868-1948) was a distinguished Portuguese pianist, teacher, and composer, and a notable pupil of Franz Liszt. Born on São Tomé Island, he exhibited remarkable musical talent from a young age. After moving to Portugal, his professional career began in 1886 and persisted until 1945, incorporating worldwide concert tours and teaching. Not only a virtuoso, Motta also championed the music of J.S. Bach and Beethoven, and composed works including a symphony and piano pieces. As Director of the Lisbon Conservatory from 1919 to 1938, he shaped future generations, including the pianist Sequeira Costa.
