More about Herbert Howells
Herbert Norman Howells CH CBE (1892-1983) was an English composer, organist, and teacher, noted for his substantial contribution to Anglican church music. Born in Lydney, Gloucestershire, as the youngest of six children, he demonstrated early musical talent, which led to music lessons under Herbert Brewer at Gloucester Cathedral. His works are influenced by Vaughan Williams and Tudor composers. Howells studied at the Royal College of Music in London and composed both orchestral and organ music, including his Mass in the Dorian Mode and Psalm Preludes【27†source】.
