Frank Bridge (1879-1941) was an English composer, violist, and conductor. Born in Brighton, he was the ninth child of a violin teacher. He rigorously trained in music from a young age and later studied at the Royal College of Music under Charles Villiers Stanford. Bridge played in string quartets and occasionally conducted, deputizing for Henry Wood. He embraced composition with patronage from Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Bridge's music, influenced by his pacifist views, encompassed a wide range of styles, searching for spiritual consolation through pastoral and elegiac tones, especially during World War I. His students included Benjamin Britten, who held his teaching in high regard and commemorated him in 'Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge'. Bridge's later works expanded his expressive language, though he felt overshadowed by his earlier compositions.
