More about Carl Stamitz
Carl Philipp Stamitz, a notable German composer of partial Czech ancestry, was a leading figure of the second generation of the Mannheim School. Born in Mannheim, he was the eldest son of the composer Johann Stamitz. Carl received his initial musical education from his father and later from Christian Cannabich. He significantly contributed to the development of the symphony and the concerto genres and is particularly famed for his clarinet and viola concertos. Despite his successes, Stamitz struggled financially throughout his life, which led him to travel extensively across Europe seeking employment. He lived his later years in Jena, descending into poverty and passing away in 1801.
