Luiz de Freitas Branco

Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco was a Portuguese composer, musicologist, and professor of music influential in the development of Portuguese music in the early 20th century. Born into an aristocratic family in Lisbon, he had a cosmopolitan education and began composing early, studying in Berlin and Paris. Luís became a professor at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music in 1916, contributing significantly to musical education. Despite political challenges in the 1930s, he continued to compose and research, notably on Portuguese early music.
