Franz Liszt (22 October 1811 – 31 July 1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, and teacher of the Romantic period. He gained renown for his skill as a pianist in the 1830s, becoming one of the greatest pianists of his time. Liszt was a musical promoter and benefactor to many composers, and his extensive and diverse body of work influenced his contemporaries and anticipated 20th-century musical trends. His contributions included the symphonic poem, thematic transformation, and the invention of the masterclass.
