Marcin Stańczyk studied law at the University of Łódź, music theory in the class of Marta Szoka and composition with Zygmunt Krauze at the Academy of Music in Łódź. He continued his post-graduate studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Ivan Fedele and at electronic music and new technology courses at IRCAM in Paris (2011–14). He has taken part in numerous courses, including as the 13th Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands (2007), a workshop with the Klangforum Wien team at the Biennale in Venice (2007, 2008), International Summer Courses of New Music in Darmstadt (2010), the composer’s session “Voix Nouvelles” (at Royamount, near Paris ) with Brian Ferneyhough and the seminar “De Musica ovvero la fabbrica della creatività” (in Rome) with Beat Furrer (2010). Inspired by the cycle of Władysław Strzemiński’s paintings Afterimages of the Sun, he decided to translate the optical phenomenon into sounds. In his music, real sounds, noise, resonances, singing and screams coexist on equal basis. The theatrical element accompanying the performance of the piece is an integral part of the composition, which is why the artist often puts stage directions in his works – tips on gestures and movements.
