Marco Betta, born in 1964, is an Italian composer known for his contributions to opera, film score, orchestral, and chamber music. He received his education at the Conservatorio di Palermo under Eliodoro Sollima, and furthered his studies with Armando Gentilucci and Salvatore Sciarrino. His compositions, which feature on prominent Italian and European stages, reflect a synthesis of old Sicilian culture and contemporary music, frequently utilizing minimalist and neotonal techniques. Betta served as Teatro Massimo’s Artistic Director from 1994 to 2002, overseeing its much-celebrated reopening. He also teaches composition at the Conservatoire of Palermo.
