Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer, noted for her pure tone, impeccable diction, and improvisational ability, particularly in scat singing. After a difficult adolescence, she found success with the Chick Webb Orchestra and as a solo artist, collaborating with greats like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Her interpretations of the Great American Songbook are particularly celebrated. After a nearly six-decade-long career, she passed away in 1996.
